Everything about the
online permit exam

01Who is allowed to take the knowledge exam online?
Only applicants under 18. The Florida DMV states it plainly: you must be under 18 to take the Class E knowledge exam online. Anyone 18 or older takes it in person, at a driver license service center or with a provider that tests in person. For online testing, the Florida DMV keeps a table of approved exam providers, and American Safety Institute appears on it with the knowledge exam marked as available online. The same table shows that it does not give the driving skills test, so the road test is a separate appointment that you schedule later on.
02How does parent monitoring work?
Section 322.56 of the Florida Statutes sets two moments. Before the exam starts, a parent, guardian or other responsible adult gives the provider their own driver license number and certifies that they will monitor the test. Then, before the learner's license is issued, the same adult certifies it again to the state on form HSMV 71144, the Parent/Guardian On-line Test Proctoring Form. That form has to be signed in front of a driver license examiner or notarized. Have the adult's license at hand on exam day, and decide ahead of time whether you will notarize the form or sign it at the office.
03What is on the exam, and what score do I need?
The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions about Florida traffic laws and road signs, and you need 40 correct answers, which is 80%, to pass. There is no partial credit for a near miss, so the safest plan is to keep studying until you score well above that line on practice runs. The Florida driver handbook is the main source, and the state also points students to the handbook and practice testing. Read a chapter, take a practice test on it, review every wrong answer and only then move on to the next section.
04Why is the exam only in English now?
A Florida DMV bulletin dated January 30, 2026 announced that, starting Friday, February 6, 2026, all knowledge and skills exams are given exclusively in English. The change covers every license class, and no interpreters or translations are allowed. For that reason our store does not offer a Spanish version of the official permit exam. Studying in Spanish is still allowed and often helpful: the Permit Prep Test comes in Spanish, and you can use it to understand each rule before you practice the same questions in English. It also means every question on the screen is in English, so practice reading each one slowly and completely before you answer.
05Should I take the Permit Prep Test first?
It is optional, and it is the step we suggest before paying for the official exam. The prep test is practice only, with no state approval list behind it, and its job is to show you which topics still trip you up. Our store offers it in English and in Spanish. A practical routine is to take it in Spanish to check that you understand the rules, then take it again in English so the wording of the real exam feels familiar. When your English practice scores sit comfortably above 40 out of 50, that is a good sign it is time to book the real one.
06What do I bring to the Tax Collector afterwards?
Your exam result reaches the state electronically, so no paper certificate is needed. Bring proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or U.S. passport, your Social Security number and proof of your residential address. Add the Parental Consent Form HSMV 71142, signed in front of the examiner or notarized; a step-parent may not sign it unless they have adopted the minor. Because you tested online, also bring the proctoring form HSMV 71144. At the office you pass a vision and hearing test and pay the learner's license issuance fee. Check the office's website or call before you go to confirm hours and whether you need an appointment.
07What is the random re-test?
Under section 322.56 of the Florida Statutes, an applicant who passed the knowledge exam with a provider may be picked at random to take the exam again at the office, at no fee. If you fail that re-test, you pay a re-exam fee at your next attempt. You cannot predict who will be chosen, so treat the online pass as the start of your preparation, not the end of it. Keep reviewing the handbook until the office visit, and you will be ready if the examiner asks you to sit down for a second round.
08Where can adults take the written test in Osceola County?
If you are 18 or older, you take the knowledge exam in person. The Osceola County Tax Collector gives the written test at its Main Office by appointment or as a walk-in, and at its Campbell City office by appointment only, with testing hours listed from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The BVL and St. Cloud branches do not give the written test or the road test. Before you go, check the office's current schedule and the list of documents it asks for, since a missing paper can cost you the trip. Teens under 18 can skip that trip for the exam itself by testing online, but they still visit the office later for the learner's license.
09What rules apply once I have the learner's license?
For the first three months you may drive only during daylight; after that, until 10 p.m. A licensed driver who is 21 or older must always sit in the front passenger seat. You hold the learner's license for 12 months, or until you turn 18, before moving up. Before the Class E license, a parent or guardian certifies 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night. Lessons with our bilingual instructors in Kissimmee are a structured way to build those skills safely, so you arrive at the road test ready.

Questions about the
ONLINE PERMIT TEST

01Can I take my Florida permit test online at home?
Yes, if you are under 18. It has to go through a provider the state approves for online testing, and a parent, guardian or responsible adult must monitor it. If you are 18 or older, you test in person.
02How many questions are there, and how many can I miss?
There are 50 multiple-choice questions and you need 40 right, so you can miss up to 10. Aim well above the minimum in practice, so a few unfamiliar questions on the real exam do not sink you.
03Is the permit test available in Spanish?
No. Since February 6, 2026, Florida gives every knowledge and skills exam in English only, with no interpreters or translation. The prep test comes in Spanish, so you can learn the material in the language you prefer.
04Does a parent have to be involved?
Yes. Before the exam, the adult gives the provider their driver license number and certifies they will monitor the test. Later they certify it again on form HSMV 71144, signed in front of a driver license examiner or notarized.
05Do I need DETS before the permit test?
The state requires proof of DETS before it issues the learner's license, and American Safety Institute's own instructions ask for DETS first. Finish the 6-hour course before you start the exam.
06How old do I have to be?
You must be under 18 to take the exam online, and at least 15 for the learner's license to be issued.
