Before your first
lesson
01What should I bring to my first lesson?
Bring your Florida learner's license (or a valid license), any glasses or contacts your license requires and comfortable closed-toe shoes. We bring the dual-control car. If you booked a road package, tell us the pick-up address ahead of time so the lesson starts on schedule.
02How does a dual-control car keep me safe?
The instructor's side has its own brake pedal and an extra mirror. You drive normally while the instructor watches the road with you and can apply the brake when needed. That safety net lets you focus on learning each skill instead of worrying about mistakes.
03What does the Class E knowledge exam cover?
It has 50 multiple-choice questions about Florida traffic laws, safe driving practices and road signs, and you need 40 correct answers to pass. Since February 6, 2026, FLHSMV gives it in English only. The official Florida driver handbook is free on our handbooks page in English and Spanish, so you can study in both.
04How should I practice between lessons?
With a learner's license you must always drive with a licensed driver who is 21 or older in the front passenger seat. Short, frequent sessions work better than one long drive: start in an empty lot, repeat what you practiced in your last lesson and write down questions for your instructor.
05Which Florida rules surprise new drivers?
You may turn right on red after a full stop unless a sign says otherwise. The Move Over law requires you to change lanes or slow down for stopped emergency, service and disabled vehicles. Texting while driving is illegal, and in school zones and active work zones a phone may only be used hands-free, with limited exceptions such as reporting an emergency. Florida law requires headlights from sunset to sunrise and whenever it is raining, smoky or foggy.
06How will I know I am ready for the road test?
When you can do the maneuvers on the Florida skills test without reminders, stop fully at stop signs, signal every turn, keep your lane and hold a safe following distance in real traffic. We tell you honestly where you stand after each lesson, and a mock test shows what is left to practice.
07What happens in a typical two-hour lesson?
We start with a quick review of the last lesson, practice one or two new skills in a low-stress area and then use them on real streets. The last minutes are for questions and a short plan for your next practice session, so every lesson builds on the one before.
08Can I learn in Spanish and take the test in English?
Yes. Many of our students learn in Spanish and prepare the road test vocabulary in English at the same time, because FLHSMV now gives every exam in English only. We mix both languages during the lesson so the examiner's instructions sound familiar on test day.
09Do you teach adults who have never driven?
Yes. Many of our beginners are adults, including people learning to drive for the first time after moving to the United States. The steps are the same as for any new driver: a learner's license first, then lessons at your pace, and the road test when you and your instructor agree you are ready.

01Do I need a learner's license before my first lesson?
Yes. You practice on public roads with a Florida learner's license (or a valid license from another state or country). To get it you pass the Class E knowledge exam — 50 questions, and you need 40 correct. If you are under 18 and have never held a license, Florida also requires the 6-hour DETS course, which you can take online through our partner American Safety Institute.
02How many lessons does a true beginner need?
It depends on how much you have practiced at home. Many beginners start with Silver (2 lessons) or Gold (3 lessons) and add more if needed. After each lesson we tell you what is left, so you only book what you actually need.
03I'm nervous behind the wheel. Will you push me?
No. We start away from traffic, build one skill at a time and only move to busier roads when you feel ready. You can ask to repeat anything.
04Is the car safe for someone who has never driven?
Yes. Our cars have dual controls, so the instructor has a brake on the passenger side and can brake when needed.
05Can I pay online?
