Choosing the right
online course
01I got a traffic ticket. Which course is it?
The Basic Driver Improvement course (BDI) is the one drivers usually elect after a ticket, and a court may order the 4-hour or 8-hour version. Your citation and the clerk of court set the deadlines, so check them before you enroll. FLHSMV explains who can elect BDI.
02What is the Advanced Driver Improvement course?
The 12-hour ADI course is typically required by FLHSMV or a court, for example after a license suspension for points or as a habitual traffic offender. If you received a notice, it will say which course you need.
03Is there a course for mature drivers?
Yes. Florida law gives drivers 55 and older who complete a mature driver course approved by FLHSMV an insurance discount, and each insurer sets the amount. Ask your insurer how it applies to you and review the course details at checkout before you enroll.
04Who teaches the online courses?
American Safety Institute, LLC delivers the online courses and handles enrollment, the course platform and completion. Ready 4 Roads teaches behind-the-wheel lessons. The Student login link opens ASI's portal for our store, where you can continue a course you already started.

ONLINE COURSES
01Which course does a new driver under 18 need?
Since August 1, 2025, Florida requires drivers under 18 who have never held a license to complete the 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course before applying for a license. American Safety Institute is on FLHSMV's list of DETS providers.
02And a new driver 18 or older?
First-time drivers 18 and older take the 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course (TLSAE), also called the drug and alcohol course. It is available in English and Spanish.
03What is BDI?
Basic Driver Improvement is a course some drivers can elect after a traffic ticket, or that a court may order. FLHSMV explains who is eligible; for example, you cannot elect it if you did so in the previous 12 months or hold a CDL.
04Can I take the official permit exam in Spanish?
No. Since February 6, 2026, FLHSMV gives all driver license knowledge and skills exams in English only, without interpreters. You can still study and take practice tests in Spanish, and our lessons can be in Spanish.
05Where do I log in to my course?

06Are the CDL courses state-approved?
The Class A and Class B entry-level driver training courses are sold through American Safety Institute. Check the course details at checkout for its registration information before you enroll.
