Florida rules for
new teen drivers
01What is the DETS course?
Driver Education Traffic Safety is a 6-hour course approved by FLHSMV. Since August 1, 2025, first-time drivers under 18 must complete it before applying for a license. It can be taken online or in a classroom, and some county school boards offer driver education programs that can substitute for it. 02What does a parent need to sign?
For a learner's license, a parent or legal guardian signs the parental consent form in person at the office or has it notarized; a step-parent can sign only after a legal adoption. Before the road test, a parent or responsible adult over 21 certifies the supervised driving hours on the state form.
03What are the learner's license rules?
For the first three months your teen may drive only in daylight, and after that until 10 p.m., always with a licensed driver who is 21 or older in the front passenger seat. The learner's license must be held for 12 months or until age 18, and a moving violation can extend that period.
04How many practice hours are required?
Florida requires at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night, certified by a parent, guardian or responsible adult over 21 before a teen can get a Class E license. Professional lessons add structured practice on top of the hours you drive together.
05How can I coach my teen at home?
Keep sessions short and regular, start in low traffic and add one new situation at a time, such as a busier intersection or a first highway on-ramp. Use the same words the instructor uses, stay calm and give instructions early. After each lesson we share what to practice next.
06What changes once my teen has a license?
Drivers who are 16 may drive between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., and those who are 17 between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m., unless driving to or from work or with a licensed driver who is 21 or older. Texting while driving is illegal for everyone, and in school and active work zones a phone may only be used hands-free, with limited exceptions such as reporting an emergency.
07Can my teen take the knowledge exam online?
Applicants under 18 may take the knowledge exam online through a third-party administrator approved by FLHSMV. A parent proctoring form is required, notarized or signed in front of a driver license examiner, and the exam is in English only. Check the details with your Tax Collector before you book.
08What if my teen gets a ticket with a learner's license?
A moving violation conviction while holding a learner's license extends the required holding period to one year from the conviction date, or until age 18, whichever comes first. That delays the road test, so it pays to keep the practice hours calm and by the rules.
09Are there school requirements for teen applicants?
Yes. Applicants under 18 must meet school attendance requirements, and Tax Collector offices such as Orange County's list it among the conditions. Ask your county office which proof it needs so the visit is not wasted.
10Can my teen take lessons before getting a learner's license?
Not on public roads. Driving on the street requires a learner's license, so the first step is the DETS course, the knowledge exam and the vision and hearing screening. Once the learner's license is issued, lessons can start right away and count as structured practice.

01Does my teen need a course before getting a license?
Yes. Since August 1, 2025, Florida requires drivers under 18 who have never held a license to complete the 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course before applying for a license (FLHSMV). Teens who already held a Florida learner's license before that date are not affected. Your teen can take DETS online through American Safety Institute — see our online courses.
02What does my teen need to get a learner's license?
Your teen must be at least 15 and pass the Class E knowledge exam (50 questions, 40 correct). FLHSMV also lists document, vision and hearing requirements; check flhsmv.gov before the appointment.
03How much supervised driving does Florida require?
Florida's graduated license rules require a parent or guardian to certify at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night, before a teen can get a Class E license. Our lessons count as professional practice on top of the time you drive together.
04Can a parent ride along?
Lessons are one-on-one with the instructor, which helps teens focus. After each lesson we tell the parent what to practice at home.
