- Bring a vehicle with valid registration and proof of insurance; it must pass a basic safety check.
- Teens need a learner's license held 12 months and 50 certified supervised hours, 10 at night.
- Expect a three-point turn, backing about 50 feet, a quick stop and parking on a grade.
- When backing, look to the rear; the mirror and backup camera are not allowed for that maneuver.
- No passengers or interpreters ride along, and the test is given in English only.
Who can take the Florida road test (under 18 vs 18 and older)?
For the Florida road test, officially the Class E driving skills test, you bring a registered, insured vehicle that passes a basic safety check and drive a set of maneuvers with an examiner, in English. Teens must hold a learner's license for 12 months first, while applicants 18 and older can test without that wait. As a driving school in Kissimmee, we build our DMV road test prep lessons around these exact maneuvers.
If you are under 18, you must also:
- Hold the learner's license for 12 months or until you turn 18.
- Have no moving-violation convictions in those 12 months (one is allowed if adjudication was withheld).
- Have a parent, guardian or responsible adult 21 or older certify at least 50 hours of driving, including 10 at night.
- Have parental consent on file and comply with school attendance requirements.
If you are 18 or older, you can schedule the road test once you have passed the knowledge exam.
What do you need to bring to the Florida road test?
Use this checklist the night before:
- A vehicle you provide. In Osceola County, the applicant supplies the car for the test.
- Valid registration and proof of insurance (PIP and property damage liability, or PDL) inside the vehicle.
- A licensed driver to bring you, if you do not have a valid license yet.
- The 50-hour certification if you are 16 or 17: the Certification of Minor Driving Experience (HSMV 71143), signed by a responsible adult over 21 in front of an examiner or notarized.
- An appointment. In Osceola County, road tests are by appointment only at the Main Office and the Campbell City office.
No car of your own? Some of our road lesson packages include the school's dual-control car for the road test.
What does the examiner check on your car before the test?
The examiner inspects the vehicle first. The test is not given if any of these apply:
- The horn, rear-view mirror, turn signals, steering, brakes or tires are defective.
- The brake lights or tail lights do not work.
- There is no driver-side windshield wiper, or the headlights do not work when visibility is reduced.
- Cracked glass blocks your view.
- The tag is expired.
- The car has no doors, or the front doors do not open from both inside and outside.
- The seats are not fixed in place, or you cannot give hand signals from the driver's seat.
- It is a Jeep-type vehicle without framed doors, it fails the bumper height rule, or it is a low-speed vehicle.
Walk around the car the day before with a helper and check every light, the horn and the tag date.
What maneuvers are on the Florida driving skills test?
The Florida DMV lists 14 maneuvers on its Class E skills test page. Practice each one until it feels routine:
- Three-point turn in a space 20 to 40 feet wide.
- Approach of a crossing.
- Yielding the right-of-way.
- Straight-in parking.
- Parking on a grade: uphill and downhill, with and without a curb.
- Stopping quickly.
- Backing about 50 feet at slow speed while looking to the rear.
- Obeying stop signs.
- Obeying traffic signals.
- Signal and turn: signal during the last 100 feet; hand or mechanical signals are accepted.
- Passing.
- Staying in the proper lane.
- Following at a safe distance: at least four seconds.
- Proper posture behind the wheel.
Here are the three-point turn steps from the official handbook:
- Move to the far right, check traffic and signal left.
- Turn the wheel sharply left, creep forward and stop at the curb.
- Reverse with the wheels turned sharply right, stopping at the right curb.
- Shift to drive and pull forward.
Never make a three-point turn on a curve, a hill, a highway or where U-turns are prohibited.
Is parallel parking on the test, and can you use a backup camera?
Parallel parking is not on the list of maneuvers the Florida DMV publishes for the Class E skills test. Straight-in parking and parking on a grade are.
Straight-in parking means pulling forward into a marked space, so practice stopping centered between the lines without touching them.
For backing, you reverse about 50 feet at slow speed while looking to the rear. You may not use the rear-view mirror or the rear-view camera monitor for this maneuver, so practice turning your body to look back until it feels natural.
Can anyone ride along or interpret during the test?
No. No other passengers are permitted during the exam, and in Osceola County no one may accompany you and the examiner. Older handbooks allowed a language interpreter, but since February 6, 2026, exams are given in English only and interpreters are no longer permitted.
If English is your second language, practice responding to short driving directions in English. Lessons in a mix of Spanish and English can help you connect the two languages before test day.
What happens if you fail the Florida road test, and when can you retake it?
The examiner explains your mistakes after the test. If you fail, you are asked to study or practice before you come back, and a retest fee applies. We found no statewide waiting period in the official rules; in Osceola County, you can take only one driving test per day.
If you pass, the examiner collects the license fee and issues your license. Teens then follow the Class E time limits: at 16 you may drive from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and at 17 from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m., unless you are driving to or from work or with a licensed driver 21 or older. Driving during restricted hours adds 3 points, and a driver under 18 with 6 or more points in 12 months is restricted to Business Purposes Only for one year.
